It Started With an Opportunity

My name is Cynthia Nokubonga Gumede, and I am from KwaDukuza. I matriculated in 2022, and in 2023 I began my tertiary journey at the Durban University of Technology, where I studied for a Diploma in Accounting. I was fortunate enough to have the Balwin Foundation (now known as The Beyond Bricks Foundation) support me as my sponsor throughout my studies, from 2023 until 2025, a period of three years. Their support played a very important role in helping me achieve my academic goals and ultimately graduated in record time. All my tuition fees and outstanding fees were fully covered and cleared up by the Foundation, allowing me to focus on my studies without the financial burden that comes with tertiary education. On 11 May 2026, I proudly graduated with my Diploma in Accounting. This was a very special and meaningful milestone in my life, and one that would not have been possible without the support and investment that the Foundation made in my education. One of the highlights of being part of the Foundation was the opportunity to gain practical workplace experience during the university holidays. I had the opportunity to work in and gain exposure to various departments, including Safety keeping, Site Administration and Reception. These experiences allowed me to understand the working environment better and gave me practical skills that I could not have gained from my studies alone. Through these holiday work opportunities, I was able to improve my public speaking, communication and computer skills, while also gaining confidence in myself and my abilities. The experience helped me grow not only academically, but also personally and professionally. I have so much to say about my experience as a Foundation student. The support, treatment and opportunities I received from the Beyond Bricks Foundation were truly exceptional. I always felt supported and valued throughout my journey. The Foundation sponsored me until I completed my qualification, and I am forever grateful for the opportunity to have been part of the Beyond Bricks Foundation. Thank you for believing in me, supporting my education and giving me opportunities that have helped shape the person I am today. I will always be grateful for the role the Foundation played in my journey, and I hope that my story can inspire other young people to believe in their dreams and make the most of every opportunity they receive.
